We perk up. We listen. We begin to stomp our boots, to hoot n holler, to hold each other and swing round and round as we’re swept away on a wave that belongs to us all. Music is shared, not lent or given. Everyone has a say in where it goes regardless of which side of the microphone you may be standing. It takes a village, as they say. The two bands playing our final For the Folks of 2017 use their every part to create songs that rush toward the audience with open arms. Join us, the songs cry out, breathe into us and make us more than we could become on our own. Nothing and no one is left out, and the result is a collective experience capable of reaching heights that no other medium can begin to approach. Abalone Grey throws the kitchen sink at every song. Each member gathers up all they have, all they’ve worked for and dreamt about and strived to become, and they weave it together before offering it up to their crowd. The fruit of their labor isn’t the stuff that sits on a table in an oil painting, it’s twined and veiny and full of earth. It comes from a real place. To listen to their recordings is to get to know them; to see them play in person is to fall in love. They are willing and ready to go fifteen rounds with each song before they get it right, and hints of that struggle inform the band’s story like lines on an aging face. By the time the music reaches the audience, it need only be embraced in order to embark on a new life in new hands. The hard work has already been done. B and the Hive is a steam train that just keeps on coming. Their sound is made more to be felt than just heard and they feed off the live performance as if every one might be their last. No moments are lost or neglected when they put their hands together, rather they build off each other and embark on a mission to see just where their music will take them on any given night. This relentless pursuit has taken them up and down the coast as they win over one audience at a time, and to enter their world is to watch them grow before your very eyes. Their enthusiasm seeps off the stage and burrows itself in the crowd, and when they move on toward their next stop they leave fully loaded with new friends behind them as they zero in on the next set of people poised to discover them. A grand finale means leaving nothing on the table. For the Folks is but a mirror to our community, albeit a fun house mirror that brings out our best qualities, and as bands show up to give us all they’ve got, we come out in droves to give it right back. These are the salad days, the fading prints of youthful smiles and dancing babies, a time for fist pumps and hand holding. We’re making new friends and celebrating the old ones. Suddenly, we face the difficult questions so easily brushed away during summer revelry; where are we, what are we moving toward, are we building the place we’ll someday want to inhabit. The trials around us are real and the easy path is soon revealed as no path at all. In this November of our existence, the necessary self-examination is eased when coupled with the sight of others around us fighting the same battles. Caitlin Jemma and Margo Cilker have long been getting up on the dreariest of mornings and answering the call of the world around them. Their struggle is for a life that is honest and work that is true, and it embodies the potential of music to lift us from the doldrums and help us live up to the individuals our ten year-olds selves dreamt to become. Caitlin Jemma can do anything. Whether it’s whispering a melody that plucks dew from the grass or belting a ballad that raises fists and shakes the floorboards, it’s clear she’s doing exactly what she was put on this earth to do. She sings for those who’ve never heard. She holds nothing back. She stops for no one and yet she gathers up all those in her vicinity and brings them along for the ride. Her music is as fearless as she is, always changing and growing and daring to venture off into unexplored realms while making a fool of anyone trying to confine her to a single genre. She’s an outlaw from the long reach of the music industry and her allure lies in the purity that defines her as an artist. She’s strong and confident and uncompromising, and most of all, she’s fun. My gawd she’s fun. In a world rife with concessions, she’s the best Caitlin Jemma there could possibly be, and she’s only getting better. If you haven’t met and therefore begun to love Margo Cilker, it’s just a matter of time. Recharging in California between grand worldly excursions, she carries the torch of the troubadour who belongs on the road bringing smiles to every nook and alleyway through which she traipses. Her music demonstrates a traveler’s versatility, a knack for connecting with whomever she may be playing with and for and feeling like it’s right at home regardless of its surroundings. Her work is so polished that it immediately exudes grace and familiarity, and an audience needs only to settle into her first song to be sure that they’ll be listening to her for a long, long time. One dares not call it effortless, it’s simply that the bulk of the effort has already been seen to and all that’s left to do is to enjoy the result. Dr. Oliver Sachs wrote, “Music is not a luxury, but a necessity,” and in the months before his death he spoke of how encouraged he felt to be leaving the world to the emerging generations of hopers and dreamers and unapologetic badasses. He believed in them, in us, despite all the forces stacking up in opposition. He believed in Caitlin Jemma. He believed in Margo Cilker. He believed in For the Folks. It shakes doors from their hinges and blows windows from their sills, and what's left is the flesh and bones of the foundation; music's soul, so to speak. Some bands say to hell with the adornments and look you straight in the eye before they whisk you away with a sweeping embrace not easily eluded. The Sam Chase & the Untraditional and the Turkey Buzzards are two such bands. They shrug off the lavish and celebrate the struggle as their music touches upon the basis of why we gather for shows, and their silhouettes shimmer as the personification of a fearless devotion to their art. The Sam Chase doesn't ask permission. Nor do they seek forgiveness. With grizzled vocals as the engine, the collected parts link together to form a train that barrels forth far beyond wherever a conventional track might lead. Their music drips with emotion and each instrument has a say in how deep the songs bore into the audience's core. Their performances gather momentum the further the night descends. Beams start to creak, stages begin to wilt, but the band spares no one in their crowd. They emanate such will that they've garnered a High Sierra encore- an honor almost unheard of at the festival- before the clock had struck noon. They turn the world upside down, and they will not be held responsible for flipping it back again once they're done. As the embodiment of the Central Coast, The Turkey Buzzards are nothing less than the ground beneath our feet. Their songs are born from the soil, course through the veins and come steaming out the ears to usher the listener into an indeterminate time. Their lyrics step out into their own while the giants who came before them look on approvingly, and the band unearths every stone that lies between where they are and where their music is headed. Their newest album demonstrates a versatility and loyalty to everything they've built up to this point, and as they continue to venture out into the world they promise to cast their home and the people they represent in the very best light. When the Turkey Buzzards helped launch For the Folks, the vision was to showcase the best of our community while extending our open arms to the strangers, wanderers, and seekers in our midst. A year and a half later, the best we have to offer combines with the best of the Bay Area for a night that demonstrates just how dreams materialize when ideas outgrow expectations. Music is crafted in much the same way. Thoughtful artists resist the urge to push their work out into the world to see if it flies. Instead, they craft each song into maturity until the band itself is prepared to set forth as a single entity. As For the Folks continues its own growth in the care of our dynamic village, the two bands featured at the height of summer embody the toil and attention of artists striving to make their distinct marks on their audience. When The Monroe takes a stage, they do so as if that stage has been made specifically for them. They come prepared with work and struggle as the foundation for a sound that swoops up the room and implores everyone to join them on their journey. They perform with the confidence, vulnerability, and courage made to inspire the audience to participate in the bubbling magic that rises when such forces come together. They play each show as if it may be their last, and their best. Close your eyes and you'd think they're playing just for you. Open them and recognize the power that has connected the pieces that make up the whole. The music transforms the floor before them, and when the lights finally go down, they leave a place different than how they found it. This same focus on the most minute of details has allowed The Creston Line to firmly plant its feet in its home soil as the band sets its sights on the winding road ahead. Their songs resonate with a journey into which each member has dived head first while questioning every lyric, riff, and emotional build. The diversity of skill they bring to the table results in a sound that extends beyond genre and speaks to their individual artistry as musicians in their own right. While the result may be seamless, it's impossible to mistake it as easy. Their sweat pours off each creation and as it's clear they've done the best they possible could at every nook and cranny. If a musician opts to drift into complacency, it's likely that this fickle current will sweep that artist out into oblivion. Bands must struggle and fight for survival, and only those with a hunger for discovery will emerge as a force capable of tapping into the fundamental core of their audience. As For the Folks begins a new chapter in its second season, it hosts two bands that are constantly pushing themselves to become the artists they've stayed up deep into the night dreaming to be. Ethan Burns & the Ragged Jubilee and Erisy Watt are both forging new paths that refuse to be contented with their past success. They're fighting. They're taking risks. They're changing as fast as the waters around them. Ethan Burns & the Ragged Jubilee combines the focused drive of a band that for years has left its mark on the Central Coast with a raw emotion reminiscent of a young punk band clawing its way onstage. Their music bursts out at the audience, slaps them around a bit and circles back for more, and at the end of each song both musicians and listeners can be found gasping for breath. The band leaves nothing on the table, and it implores the audience to do the same. The attainment of such musical standing is no coincidence; it's earned by way of refusing to take any of the easy paths offered and by seeing each endeavor through to the end regardless of the toil. The journey is evident in their work and results in an instant connection with those for whom they play. The sound hits you in the chest, wriggles in through your nostrils and wraps itself around your knees, and when the dust settles, all that remains is the smoky silhouette of a band ready to play one more. Since we first fell in love with Erisy Watt in the summer of twenty-sixteen, the band has steered its course toward mesmerizing audiences the world over. From Thailand to Germany, they've reached out and embraced listeners one at a time, whispering in each individual ear you're my favorite, you're my favorite. Their music flows so naturally, their cohesion so harmonious and their identity so clear that they start to make what they do look easy. In the work of a master, one rarely notices the artist's hand. Now, one year after they lovingly entered our lives, they are gearing up for a summer tour of the west coast by embarking on an extended preliminary jaunt up and down the California coast. It's just our luck that we find ourselves welcoming them back to SLO as their star rises for more and more to see, knowing that they will take a part of us with them as they shine their light into other fortunate nooks and crannies. William S. Burroughs wrote, "When you stop growing you start dying." These two bands are undoubtedly alive and well as they prepare to kick off a new season of For the Folks with a tangible excitement for what's to come. Sustained growth requires an assessment of where you’ve been, where it’s brought you, and where you want to go, and quiet reflection is as natural a part of this process as autumn dipping into winter. Hibernation, meditation, and resolution build toward spring’s revitalization, and the energy that surrounds such potential is what gets all the world dancing barefoot in the rain. As For the Folks enters its third year, we’ve taken the winter to dissect just how to keep propelling forward, and it’s only appropriate to open the season with a pair of bands that display the same hunger to progress. The Highway Poets and Wild Iris approach the road before them with eyes scouring the expanse of the great western sky, and their music reflects the drive of artists challenging each other to push their work further and create stronger bonds with their audience each time out. The Highway Poets perform with the urgency of a freight train. Their sound races off the stage, swirls around the crowd, and whips up a frenzy that leaves no body unmoved. They come in heavy and lean hard on the gas, and all those in the vicinity are encouraged to hang on for dear life. Each show is an event of its own and they play as if their lives depend on it. Which, of course, they do. Music doesn’t allow for anything but everything. There’s too much power, too much at stake, too many eyes and ears poised on each ebb and flow that a moment of insincerity can sink the ship. This band recognizes that to stop growing is to stagnate, and as they push their music they bring the crowd along on a ride that’s sure to break new ground at every turn. Wild Iris is the embodiment of artists putting every ounce of themselves into their work. Their songs resonate with expression, the vocals wrapping around guitar riffs that still have the dirt dripping from their roots. The terms that attempt to define them- Americana, Country, Folk- speak to the tangible form that hangs at an audience’s fingertips like a painting you’re not only allowed to touch but to hold, embrace, dance with and adore. Their songs tell stories upon stories and one can only listen with wonder at those spinning the tales, following a breadcrumb trail of where they come from and where the path leads. Music is not given or taken, it’s shared between those who create it and those who ingest it. Wild Iris scoots over in its seat to allow the audience to join them on their ride through an open landscape, changing pace and texture in accordance with all the variety of the California that informs their music. They are Santa Cruz, the Central Coast, the towering redwoods and the deep blue sea, and regardless of where you reside, they feel like home. Whatever darkness there may be, it is equaled and surpassed by all the joy and hope and celebration that spews out of those who know how to conjure it. Even darkness and struggle may be cherished through the appropriate lens. Music has the power to lionize the entire spectrum, from the moments when your feet don’t touch the ground to the days when gravity seems to be picking on you, and through music we are able to feel all there is to be felt. Midtown Social and the Turkey Buzzards dive headfirst into this mysterious pool, opening themselves to whatever may befall them as if to say, “yes, we want it all,” and their work resonates with the authenticity of artists who are doing exactly what they’ve been put on this earth to do. Midtown Social has no time for anything but awesome. They hold no wistful longings except for that which lies before them, and they gather up each moment and hoist it in the air so that everyone might see the magic that lies within. Their music bursts forth and permeates everyone in their audience, daring the most cynical, surly, and sullen of the lot to just try not to have the best time. They are what happiness sounds like. They’re playing a game they know they’re going to win, and with each driving bass line, each flourish of the fiddle, each vocal eruption… how could they possibly not. They dress life up to the nines, making it shimmer and shimmy and pirouette down the street, and if they are California Soul, then my god our state’s in good hands. The Turkey Buzzards revel in life from the bottom up. They unearth, dust off, reassemble what others might overlook, and as they polish it they reveal a beauty as old as the hills. Their music seeks out the vagabonds and rabble-rousers and ne’er-do-wells, tips its hat and says, “how’d you do” while it winks and proceeds to demonstrate just how high it can raise the low. Their path unravels before them at their own pace, according to their own plan, and along the way they’re collecting the characters and settings and extraordinary circumstances that will eventually manifest into the songs you’ll teach your grandchildren. They are folk heroes in the flesh and they take to the road as if chasing their next breath. Life swirls around them, and there they are, ready to welcome it all. Eleanor Roosevelt said, “The purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” These bands are constantly challenging themselves to propel their music beyond their dreams and connect with people in absolutely every way possible. They are the takers, the schemers, the swindlers, the movers and shakers who brandish a new face for each day of the week and attempt to dominate all they regard. There are also, however, those who see magic and beauty at every turn, who recognize all that’s come before them and the chance they have to add their brush stroke to the collective canvas. To improve, to enhance, to inspire. They are the ones who catch your eye and touch your heart and widen your jaw as they whisper yes, this is what life can be…this is what life should be. The Rainbow Girls and The Riverside take not a moment for granted, and as they jump and jive and jitterbug through each overlooked burrow and forgotten alleyway, they are waving their arms and showing the way so that together we all might chance upon such majesty. Imagine a groundskeeper who mows the lawn with scissors in one hand, soil in the other, knees digging into the dirt in order to snip individual blades of grass to the precise height at the appropriate angle. Such is the way the Rainbow Girls craft a song. And like the lawn, their music is forever growing, changing, rearranging, requiring of constant attention to realize its expanding potential. The art grows, as do the artists, and those who open their ears to the fruits of the labor get to share in the celebration that embodies each performance. The band is fun, and funny, and forever infectious. They speak with their ears and listen with their hearts, all the while adding to their surroundings with a mere dip of the wand. They are a smile for a long lost friend as well as for the days to come. They are the sun and the moon and the stars all sharing the same sky. They’re what the world can be. When The Riverside reaches into the audience, their refined offering betrays years of care and consideration all focused on blossoming in that very moment. They create each song as a sentient entity. No part is extraneous, no harmony unexamined, and each player contributes to the whole with imagination and emotion as they raise their music, a light in a darkened forest. All those in the vicinity flock to it, crowd around it, stretch out their fingers to feel its glow. Their magic is such that no single member knows the spell, and yet moving together they quiet the world around them. Their performances build a house and fling the doors wide open, compelling each passerby to come inside and cozy up to their creation. Their work is fresh and draws from deep roots, simultaneously innovative and traditional, and each step forward adds to the tale of those who came before it. Mister Rodgers said, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” Once you start looking, it’s quite difficult to stop, and the worse the news, the more people who rise up to lend a hand, a hug, a smooch, a song. The Rainbow Girls and The Riverside have sculpted their lives around approaching strangers and helping them feel, hear, see, and move better. They are the people you always hope you’ll meet, and once you do, the ones you long to see again. On August 24th, on a brimming sturgeon moon, we get to open our arms and return the favor. We get to give.
